Thank you, Dean Pertl, for once again articulating what many of us believe but grow weary of "explaining" to those not familiar with the value of a music education, especially one acquired within an outstanding small liberal arts college like our beloved Lawrence University. Who would have thought that a small-town Iowa girl piano major could have a successful career as a trial lawyer in one of the most prestigious law firms in the world, then "retire" and become the resident marketing director and assistant shepherd for a farm specializing in raising a rare breed of ancient sheep for the purpose of distributing and thus preserving their genetic heritage? Talk about using those communication and collaboration and creativity skills from the conservatory! Perhaps the single most valuable "business" skill acquired by a musician in her college training is the flexibility to succeed in a range of businesses too varied and wide even to describe. After all, what business does not need employees with these skills? Hooray for music and hooray for Lawrence!
